Number of deportations from Germany increased significantly last year

Last year, nearly 18,400 people were forced to leave Germany, a significant increase compared to the year before.

This was reported by the newspaper Bild, citing a government spokesperson. According to the report, significantly more people were deported in 2024 than in the previous year. Between January and November 2024, nearly 18,400 people were deported from Germany, a 20% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

“The joint efforts of the federal and state governments in the field of repatriation are yielding initial results,” the government spokesperson stated.

In all of 2023, 16,430 people were deported. For comparison, before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the figure stood at around 22,000 deportations.

According to Bild, the nearly 18,000 deportations reported last year were offset by approximately 213,000 asylum applications. This is more than one-third fewer than in 2023, when 351,000 applications were filed.

The federal government views the increase in deportations as confirmation of its policy direction. Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated in an interview with Stern that the 20% rise in deportations represents “real progress.”
