Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has accused Ukraine of worsening the economic situation in the EU following the cessation of Russian gas transit.
According to him, the stoppage of the Ukrainian route in mid-December led to a 20% increase in natural gas prices in Europe. Szijjártó pointed out that European gas prices are significantly higher than those of competitors due to sanctions, the closure of supply sources, and the blocking of transit routes. However, he emphasized that Hungary has diversified its gas sources, which will limit the impact of the price increase on the country.
The minister stressed the need to uphold agreements between the EU and Ukraine that ensure the maintenance of energy transit routes.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also commented on the situation, criticizing Kyiv’s decision not to renew the contract with Russia, which expired at the end of 2024. He is set to hold talks in Brussels on the matter on January 9.
