Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will travel to Brussels on Thursday, January 9, for talks with representatives of the European Commission regarding the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
Fico will be accompanied by Economy Minister Denisa Saková. According to the government, a bilateral meeting with the European Commission is planned, during which Ukrainian representatives will not be present.
Earlier, it was reported that the European Commission canceled a scheduled meeting between delegations from Slovakia, Ukraine, and the EC, which was supposed to take place on January 7. That meeting was intended to discuss gas transit issues.
The gas transit contract between Ukraine and Russia expired at the end of 2024. Ukraine decided not to extend the agreement, which has drawn criticism from Slovakia.
Robert Fico strongly condemned Kyiv’s actions, sending a letter to EU leaders expressing his dissatisfaction. He also hinted at the possibility of halting electricity supplies or reducing aid to Ukrainian refugees in response to Ukraine’s decision.
