Over 30,000 evacuated as wind-driven wildfires devastate Southern California

A fierce wildfire, fueled by extreme winds, is ravaging the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, forcing over 30,000 residents to evacuate and threatening approximately 10,000 homes. The blaze erupted on Tuesday evening, spreading rapidly through the affluent neighborhood, home to several celebrity residences.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who declared a state of emergency, noted during a visit to the impacted area, “many structures already destroyed,” while emphasizing it was too early to determine the full extent of the damage.

The National Weather Service has warned of potentially “life-threatening” winds, among the strongest Southern California has seen in over a decade. These winds are intensifying fires in the Palisades and Altadena, about 40 kilometers northeast, where evacuation orders are also in effect. By Wednesday morning, a third fire had ignited near Pasadena, further complicating firefighting efforts.

Actor James Woods posted footage on social media showing flames near his home, stating, “Standing in my driveway, getting ready to evacuate,” followed by videos of the fire encroaching on his property. Mark Hamill, known for his role in Star Wars, shared that he managed a last-minute escape, witnessing “small fires on both sides of the road” as he fled.

The Pacific Palisades fire has already consumed 11.5 square kilometers of land, leaving roads clogged with evacuees, some abandoning their vehicles in a desperate attempt to escape.

Los Angeles Fire Chief reported that efforts are underway to protect the Getty Villa museum, a site showcasing art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. Although some vegetation on the grounds has burned, Getty President Katherine Fleming assured that the museum’s collections remain secure.

The wildfires have disrupted many facets of life in the region. The Screen Actors Guild Awards moved its nominations announcement online, citing safety concerns, while two movie premieres were canceled due to the hazardous conditions. The Los Angeles Unified School District temporarily relocated students from three campuses in the Pacific Palisades area.

Outgoing President Joe Biden stated that federal assistance has been offered to help suppress the fires. Meanwhile, recent dry winds and prolonged drought conditions have exacerbated the region’s vulnerability to wildfires, with temperatures well above seasonal averages.

As winds are expected to intensify, authorities warn the situation may worsen before it improves.
