The majority of Danes support Greenland remaining part of Denmark, despite statements by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump about the need for the island to become part of the United States.
According to a Megafon poll conducted for TV2, 58% of respondents favor Greenland staying within the kingdom, 28% support its independence, and 14% were undecided. Additionally, 53% of Danes support holding a referendum in Greenland within the next five years on its potential exit from the kingdom.
Most respondents (79%) believe that remaining part of the kingdom benefits Greenland, while 53% think Denmark also gains from the island’s inclusion.
Previously, Trump called Greenland strategically important for U.S. national security and refused to rule out the use of military force to gain control of the island. In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede stated that the island “is not for sale and never will be.”
Greenland, a former Danish colony until 1953, gained autonomy in 2009 with the right to self-governance in internal affairs.
