The number of fatalities from the earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China has risen to 126, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Additionally, 188 people were reported injured, the publication states. Earlier, China’s Central Television reported 95 fatalities and 130 injuries. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck today at 9:05 a.m. local time in Tingri County, Shigatse Prefecture.
The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers. Following the main quake, seismologists recorded 49 aftershocks. Within a 20-kilometer radius of the epicenter, there are three towns and 27 villages, home to approximately 6,900 people.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered the mobilization of all resources to carry out search-and-rescue operations and minimize casualties.
