Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas: suspect used ChatGPT for preparation

On New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas, an explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck occurred near the Trump International Hotel.

According to police reports, the vehicle’s 37-year-old driver, Matthew Levelsberger, used the ChatGPT chatbot to plan his actions. Investigators revealed that prior to the explosion, Levelsberger had asked the AI for information on where to acquire components for a homemade explosive device, as well as instructions for its creation and activation.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that this is the first recorded case in the United States where artificial intelligence was used for such a purpose. He called the incident a “watershed moment,” emphasizing that the use of technology in such situations requires special attention. A representative of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, expressed regret over the incident.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company has launched its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event. The Trump International Hotel, near which the explosion occurred, is owned by Donald Trump.
