After deadly shooting in Montenegro, Cetinje city council demands top officials be dismissed

In the town of Cetinje in Montenegro, where a mass shooting occurred on January 1, resulting in 12 deaths, the city council has demanded the resignation of high-ranking security officials and an increase in police numbers.

The Cetinje Assembly decided that the leadership of the security sector, including the Acting Director of the Montenegro Police, Lazar Stepanovich, should be replaced.

The statement emphasizes that the resignation should be a step towards professional and objective accountability, highlighting the readiness and desire to implement necessary reforms in the field of security. The city council also called for an independent international investigation to determine the personal responsibility of officials and identify problems in the security sector’s performance. Additionally, the statement calls for an assessment of the current security situation in Cetinje and an analysis of whether the safety of the capital’s residents is ensured.

On January 1, 45-year-old Ako Martinović opened fire, hiding from the police for several hours before ultimately taking his own life. As a result of the tragedy, 12 people were killed, and another victim died from their injuries in the hospital.

Following the incident, Montenegrin authorities expressed their intention to discuss introducing a ban on gun ownership.
