At least ten people have died in the massive wildfires sweeping across Los Angeles, and police are considering the possibility of arson in some of the fire incidents.
One person has been arrested in connection with a fire that broke out in West Hills, Los Angeles, according to U.S. media reports.
The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an arson investigation. The suspect is reported to be homeless, and the police have confirmed the arrest. However, details about the individual’s identity and potential motives have not been disclosed.
At least 20 other people have been arrested on suspicion of looting. So far, the wildfires in California have resulted in at least ten fatalities and the destruction of approximately 10,000 buildings.
According to a preliminary estimate from the private meteorological service AccuWeather, the economic losses could reach up to $150 billion. Many of the destroyed homes in the fire zones are uninsured against fire damage. Between 2020 and 2022, insurance companies refused to renew 2.8 million policies in California due to the high risk of wildfires.
With dry and windy conditions expected across much of the region, the fire danger will remain acute for the next 24 hours.
