France’s National Financial Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the Minister of Transport and former senator from the Republican Party, Philippe Tabarot, on charges of “embezzlement of public funds” and “abuse of office.”
Tabarot is under investigation for allegations of “embezzling public funds,” “abusing his official position,” and “concealing these two crimes.”
The investigation, initiated by the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office, follows a report from the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life dated July 29, 2021. A search was conducted on November 30, 2022, at Tabarot’s home, located in the Alpes-Maritimes, and at the town hall of the city of Le Cannet. A preliminary investigation is still ongoing.
The inquiry is focused on his roles within the municipality of Le Cannet, which was led by his sister from 1995 to 2017. This investigation could deal a significant blow to the recently appointed government of François Bayrou, whose position remains unstable.
