The Swedish government plans to tighten the requirements for obtaining citizenship

Migration Minister Johan Forssell announced this on January 14, following the preparation of a relevant report.

The report contains proposals aimed at strengthening the value of citizenship and increasing civic engagement. According to the report, it is proposed to extend the mandatory period of residence in Sweden for citizenship from 5 to 8 years, as well as to tighten the criteria for a “law-abiding lifestyle.”

This includes, for example, increasing the waiting time for applicants who have previously committed crimes before they can be granted citizenship.

The changes are expected to take effect from June 1, 2026. It is worth noting that after the migration wave in 2015, when many refugees entered the country, Swedish authorities have repeatedly tightened immigration and asylum rules.
