Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen held a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, during which they discussed issues related to Greenland.
According to the government office, Frederiksen emphasized that the question of the island’s independence should be decided by its residents.
Earlier, it was reported that Frederiksen reached out to Trump following his statements about Greenland and proposed discussing the situation, as informed by Agence France-Presse.
Additionally, Frederiksen highlighted the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic and expressed Denmark’s readiness to take greater responsibility in this matter. The 45-minute conversation also covered the conflict in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and relations with China.
On January 7, Donald Trump stated that Greenland should become part of the United States, calling it strategically important for national security and the protection of the “free world.” In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede declared that the island is not for sale and never will be. However, Trump declined to guarantee that military force would not be used to establish control over the island.
