In 2025, the European Union (EU) significantly increased its imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia after halting transit through Ukraine.
According to Politico, citing data from the analytics firm Kpler, EU countries imported 837,000 tons of Russian LNG in the first 15 days of January, surpassing the 760,100 tons recorded during the same period last year.
Charles Costerus, a senior analyst at Kpler, explained that 95–96% of Russian LNG supplied to Europe originates from the Yamal LNG plant. He emphasized that most of these shipments are part of long-term contracts signed earlier. The EU is not purchasing additional spot cargoes, and deliveries to Europe consist of pre-contracted volumes.
Earlier, Bloomberg also reported on the increase in Russian LNG shipments to Europe. According to the agency, the current volumes of Russian LNG exports to the EU have already exceeded the volumes of gas previously transported through Ukraine prior to January 1.
