Lithuania is sending nine officers from the Rapid Response and Counterattack Group of the Public Security Service to Kosovo to assist the Balkan country in preparations for its parliamentary elections next month.
The Lithuanian officers will participate in activities organized by the European Gendarmerie Force (EUROGENDFOR) and the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) to help ensure stability and security in the region, the Public Security Service announced on Friday.
“In light of potential security risks, EULEX has officially requested EUROGENDFOR to deploy a newly formed police unit,” the Service stated.
“This unit, acting as a second response force, will ensure that Kosovo’s police have the necessary support in the event of possible unrest,” it added.
The Lithuanian officers, set to depart on Sunday, will collaborate with colleagues from France, Italy, Portugal, and Poland to respond to riots and armed attacks, as well as bolster security during the election period.
The parliamentary elections in Kosovo are scheduled for February 9.
