Man detained in Berlin for vandalism near government buildings

A 48-year-old man was detained in Berlin for allegedly committing a series of acts of vandalism near government buildings, according to police reports.

The man was arrested on Saturday, January 18, after throwing a stone at the glass entrance door of the Paul Löbe House, part of the Bundestag complex. Police noted that his actions were “politically motivated.”

He was handed over to the Berlin State Criminal Police Office for further investigation, and authorities have filed a request for his arrest.

Unofficially, journalists learned that the man is allegedly from Damascus, Syria, and during court proceedings explained his actions as an attempt to draw attention to a constitutional complaint he had filed. During his actions, he reportedly made statements about the war in Gaza and demanded a meeting with the Chancellor.

This was not his first such act. Previous targets of his attacks included the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Chancellery, and the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. For the incident in Karlsruhe, he was already fined €2,400 for causing material damage.
