Marco Rubio confirmed as U.S. Secretary of State in unanimous Senate vote

Republican Senator Marco Rubio has been confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of State under President Donald Trump following a unanimous vote in the Senate.

On Monday, all 99 senators present supported Rubio’s nomination, just days after his smooth confirmation hearings before the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence Committees.

Rubio is the first of Trump’s cabinet nominees to secure Senate approval, with his confirmation coming mere hours after the president began his second term at the White House.

A longtime senator and experienced member of key foreign policy committees, the 53-year-old Rubio is known for his strong stances on China and unwavering support for Israel. As the son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio has consistently championed tough policies against communist-led Cuba and its allies, including Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

During his hearings, Rubio emphasized the need for the U.S. to reduce its dependence on China and pledged a robust foreign policy that prioritizes American interests.

“The U.S. must change its course to avoid greater dependence on China,” Rubio warned in his testimony.

Addressing the war in Ukraine, Rubio suggested that achieving peace would require compromises from both Moscow and Kyiv. He also proposed that Ukraine may need to reassess its pursuit of reclaiming all territories taken by Russia over the last decade.
