Austria: Knife attack in Aschaffenburg leaves 2 dead, including a child

A tragic knife attack in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, has left two people dead, including a child, and another child critically injured. The horrific incident took place in Schöntal Park around 11:45 a.m., according to police reports.

While a suspect was initially detained near the scene, authorities later identified this individual as a witness. The hunt for the actual perpetrator is ongoing.

The Main-Echo reports that the deceased child was fatally stabbed multiple times. Another young victim underwent emergency surgery at the Aschaffenburg Clinic. Police have yet to release information about the nationality of the arrested individual or the attacker.

Authorities are actively investigating the crime, piecing together the sequence of events and seeking to uncover the motive behind the attack. The crime scene, located in Schöntal Park near Aschaffenburg’s Central Station, remains cordoned off as forensic teams work.

The assailant reportedly attempted to escape by fleeing across railway tracks, prompting rail traffic to halt in and out of Aschaffenburg. The disruption’s impact on both regional and long-distance train services remains uncertain.

Schöntal Park has long been a focal point of concern for law enforcement. Just months ago, in November 2024, it was officially designated a “dangerous place” due to rising incidents of knife-related violence and drug activity. This designation allows police to conduct random checks without specific suspicion.

In October 2024, a significant drug raid in the park led to the identification of two drug storage sites and the confiscation of narcotics. Around 20 individuals were stopped and searched during the operation.

The recent attack has sent shockwaves through the local community, reigniting fears over safety in the park. As the investigation continues, residents are left grappling with the unsettling reality of violence in their area.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the attacker to come forward, as they work tirelessly to bring the perpetrator to justice.
