Slovak Prime Minister calls emergency Security Council meeting over threat data from intelligence services

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced an emergency session of the Security Council on Thursday, January 23.

The meeting was prompted by information from the Slovak Information Service (SIS) regarding a long-term organized operation aimed at destabilizing the country. The Security Council meeting will include an expanded roster, with the participation of President Peter Pellegrini and parliamentary leadership.

According to the Prime Minister, an “expert group” is active in Slovakia, allegedly previously involved in orchestrating events in Georgia and the Maidan protests in Ukraine. He emphasized that the activities of this group are under strict surveillance.

Fico stated that the group allegedly plans to destabilize the country by seizing government buildings, the parliament, and the presidential palace under the guise of peaceful protests.

In a normal democratic state where the rule of law is upheld, security services respond to such threats. This could constitute a violation of the law or even the Criminal Code. Law enforcement takes action to restore order, the Prime Minister noted.

Earlier, the SIS reported having information confirming the existence of a long-term organized operation aimed at destabilizing the country. At a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Robert Fico claimed that the Slovak opposition is preparing for a “Maidan” and the seizure of state institutions.
