Donald Trump’s Special Representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, announced an upcoming visit to Gaza as part of a group overseeing the enforcement of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He shared this in an interview with Fox News.
Witkoff stated that the ceasefire, which took effect on January 19, 2025, will be challenging to implement, despite the agreement being reached last week. He noted that his role will be to be part of an inspection team working in the Netzarim and Philadelphia corridors. These areas are zones where external observers are stationed to ensure security, prevent weapons smuggling, and monitor for any harmful actions.
The Netzarim corridor is a strip captured by Israel during the last war with Hamas, while the Philadelphia corridor is a narrow border area between Gaza and Egypt.
Witkoff’s statement marks the first public confirmation of U.S. involvement in ensuring the ceasefire agreement is upheld in Gaza.
