Near the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, a marble statue of a woman dating back to the ancient era was discovered. It had been left in a trash bag, according to local police.
The 80-centimeter-tall statue, missing its head, was accidentally found by a 32-year-old man whose name has not been disclosed. He handed the artifact over to the authorities, who consulted an archaeologist. The expert confirmed that the statue holds historical value and is subject to preservation laws.
The police confiscated the statue and launched an investigation to determine its origin. The man who found the artifact was questioned and released without charges.
Greece, renowned for its rich ancient heritage, is often the site of accidental archaeological discoveries. Such findings frequently occur during construction or excavation projects.
For instance, in December 2024, workers laying a gas pipeline near Athens unearthed a Roman-era statue of Hermes. It had been buried vertically in a brick-lined pit close to the Acropolis.
