Hungary has stepped in to ensure Slovakia receives a reliable supply of natural gas following the suspension of fuel transit through Ukraine. The change came after Russia’s Gazprom announced on January 1 that it could no longer transport gas via Ukraine due to the expiration of a five-year contract.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto reassured Slovakia, confirming that Hungary is prepared to provide the necessary gas supplies to its neighbor. This shift in energy flow is significant for Slovakia, which had previously relied on the Ukrainian transit route for a portion of its gas supply.
The sudden disruption has already triggered a surge in natural gas prices in Europe, with the market seeing a sharp 20% increase. This development highlights the growing instability in energy markets and the potential for further disruptions in the region as European countries navigate the fallout from Russia’s actions.
