MEPs from Fico’s party ask von der Leyen to intervene in gas transit situation

European Parliament members from the Slovak party Smer-SD, which supports Prime Minister Robert Fico, have sent an open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, urging her to intervene in the gas transit situation through Ukraine.

In the letter, published on the party’s social media, the MPs asked von der Leyen to “fulfill her obligations in accordance with the founding treaties and protect the interests of the member states.”

They emphasized that despite successful negotiations between the governments of Slovakia and Ukraine, they do not understand the decision of the Ukrainian president, who, in a time of war, refused to fulfill the obligations stemming from the Accession Agreement.

The Slovak MEPs noted that their initiative was supported by lawmakers from Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, and Greece.

Prime Minister Robert Fico harshly criticized Ukraine, calling it an unreliable partner. He stated that he was tired of how Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travels around Europe begging and “blackmailing” other countries.

Additionally, Hungary has hinted that it may block Ukraine’s path to the EU in response to the suspension of energy resource transit.
