Scholz at WEF: ‘Right-wing extremists’ have no freedom of speech in Europe

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a bold statement at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, asserting that while Europe upholds freedom of expression, it doesn’t extend to supporting anti-globalist movements.

Scholz aimed his criticism squarely at Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who has recently voiced support for Germany’s anti-globalist AfD party. Addressing Musk’s actions, Scholz declared, “We have freedom of expression in Europe and in Germany. Everyone, even billionaires, has the right to say what they think. But we do not accept opinions in support of right-wing positions, and I would like to emphasize that.”

The chancellor’s remarks come against the backdrop of heated debate surrounding Musk’s behavior. During an event related to Donald Trump’s inauguration, Musk allegedly made a gesture that critics have likened to a Nazi salute. This accusation has fueled controversy, with some viewing it as a provocative act tied to his perceived support of far-right ideologies.

At the WEF gathering, Scholz used the opportunity to make it clear that Europe’s commitment to free speech isn’t a blanket endorsement for all viewpoints, especially those aligned with anti-globalist politics. His pointed criticism of Musk underscores the growing tension between European leaders and prominent figures who openly back controversial political movements.

The debate over the limits of freedom of expression and the political responsibilities of influential figures like Musk is unlikely to fade anytime soon. For now, Scholz has left no doubt about where Germany stands on the issue.
