Tusk supports Warsaw mayor’s idea to tighten requirements for child aid program for Ukrainians

The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, supported the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, who proposed that the Polish child assistance program known as “800 plus” should apply only to those Ukrainians who are employed in Poland.

According to him, the government will urgently consider Trzaskowski’s proposal.

“The proposal of President Rafal Trzaskowski to pay the 800 plus only to migrants, including Ukrainians, who actually live, work, and pay taxes in our country, will be urgently reviewed by the government. I support this,” noted the Prime Minister of Poland.

Recently, Trzaskowski advocated that the Polish child assistance program, known as “800 plus,” should apply only to those Ukrainians who are employed in Poland.

The Mayor of Warsaw, who is also a presidential candidate, stated that Poland should not make the mistake that other Western countries, such as Germany or Sweden, once made, where, according to him, “it was simply advantageous to come just for social benefits.”

The “Family 500 Plus” program was introduced by the “Law and Justice” government on April 1, 2016. According to it, families with dependent children were entitled to a child-raising allowance of 500 zlotys per child until they turned 18, regardless of the family income.

Starting from January 1, 2024, the amount of this allowance is 800 zlotys per month per child.

The 800 zloty payments apply to those Ukrainians who legally entered Poland from Ukraine after February 23, 2022. In mid-2024, Warsaw tightened the criteria for granting assistance – a Ukrainian child was entitled to it only if they attend a Polish school or kindergarten.
