In Croatia, a nationwide boycott of stores, shopping centers, and gas stations has begun due to rising prices and inflation.
The initiative started with a Facebook group called “Halo inspektore” (“Hello, Inspectors”). The campaign has been supported by consumer protection societies, trade unions, political parties, and even the country’s Minister of Economy, Ante Šušnjar.
Croatian media are publishing photos showing how stores and shopping centers looked on Friday. They report that there are significantly fewer shoppers than usual. In recent days, Croatians have been encouraged on social media not to go to stores on Friday to express their anger and start the fight against rising prices.
“On January 24, Croatia is boycotting high food prices. People are being urged not to buy anything on this day,” said a message that spread on social media.
The one-day boycott is just one phase in which people are trying to show their dissatisfaction with the prices. They plan to organize a multi-day boycott in the future.
