In Denmark, for the first time, charges have been brought for desecrating the Quran, following the adoption of a law prohibiting such acts. This was announced by the prosecution.
Two suspects, whose names have not been revealed, are accused of “improper treatment of the Quran” during a festival held on the island of Bornholm in June 2024. The prosecution explained that the incident occurred publicly, attracted the attention of many people, and was broadcast online, including through a live stream on Facebook.
No further details about the case have been provided, but prosecutor Lise-Lotte Nylas stated that the court will seek to impose a fine on the accused.
According to Politiken, one of the accused is Rasmus Paludan, a Danish-Swedish activist known for his Quran-burning protests. In November 2024, Paludan was sentenced to a four-month prison term in Sweden for inciting hatred during a Quran-burning demonstration in Malmö.
The law banning the desecration of sacred texts was passed in Denmark in December 2023 after a series of Quran-burning incidents that sparked outrage in Muslim countries. Offenders face fines or up to two years in prison.
