Lithuania eyes German grounds for military training

Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakalienė announced that the Baltic nation is seeking to utilize allied infrastructure, specifically in Germany, to train its military personnel.

The minister emphasized the need for additional training facilities for Lithuanian forces.

“One option is cooperation with neighbors and allies. For example, yesterday, during the visit of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, we discussed the possibility of conducting training for some of our units at German training grounds,” she stated during a press conference at the Rokantiškės military base on Thursday.

Šakalienė also pointed out that Lithuania’s State Defense Council had previously identified the need to develop local training areas suitable for brigade-level maneuvers, but this plan has yet to be realized.

Meanwhile, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds shared updates on Latvia’s progress. He highlighted that the Selija base in Aizkraukle is expected to be completed by the end of this year, enabling brigade-level training exercises.
“We are ready to organize brigade-scale exercises starting in 2026 and are open to cooperation with regional partners, including Lithuania,” said Sprūds.
