In Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, thousands of students staged another protest on Saturday, demanding the resignation of high-ranking officials following the January 1 tragedy in the city of Cetinje, where a mass shooting claimed the lives of 13 people.
Gathering in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, participants observed a minute of silence to honor the victims before marching toward Montenegro’s parliament. Protesters carried banners with slogans such as “Grief, revolt, anger—no way back,” “A normal life?” “Montenegro and suffering,” and “Resignation is the minimum accountability.”
The students called on Prime Minister Milojko Spajić to dismiss the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Deputy Prime Minister for Security and Defense. They stated they were ready to engage in acts of civil disobedience if their demands were not met.
On January 1, 45-year-old Ako Martinović carried out a mass shooting in Cetinje. After hours of confrontation with police, he committed suicide. The tragedy claimed 12 lives, with another victim later dying in the hospital.
Amid the widespread outcry, Montenegro’s authorities are considering the possibility of a total ban on firearm ownership.
