A German tourist and a US Border Patrol officer were killed during a vehicle check on Interstate 91, about 32 km south of the Canadian border.
The car’s driver, 21-year-old Teresa Youngblut, opened fire on officers, prompting a shootout. Youngblut and her companion, German citizen Felix B., had been under FBI surveillance for several days.
Felix B. was shot while attempting to draw a weapon. The Border Patrol officer and Felix B. died in the exchange, while Youngblut was injured. She faces charges including assault on a federal agent and using a firearm during the crime. Her court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
Authorities had been monitoring the pair after they were seen wearing tactical gear and carrying weapons at a hotel. Searches of their vehicle revealed foil-wrapped phones, night-vision goggles, ammunition, and other suspicious items. The FBI’s investigation suggests links to serious crimes, including hacking and fraud.
