Two-thirds of German residents have expressed support for implementing strict measures to combat illegal migration. This sentiment was recorded in a survey conducted by the INSA institute on behalf of Bild.
66% of respondents back the proposal by Friedrich Merz, the CDU/CSU candidate for chancellor, which effectively calls for banning entry into the country for individuals without valid documents. Only 19% of those surveyed, or one in five, opposed the plan unveiled by the politician last week.
The party’s initiative also includes a proposal to deport illegal migrants to Afghanistan, even though the country is governed by the Taliban and is not considered safe. This idea has the support of 68% of Germans, while 19% are against it.
On January 23, Merz announced his intention to introduce a ban on entry for illegal migrants if he becomes head of government. His statement came in the wake of tragic events in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg, where an Afghan man, living in a refugee shelter and suffering from mental health issues, carried out a knife attack. The incident resulted in the deaths of two people, including a small child.
