The European Commission has announced negotiations with Ukraine on the resumption of gas supplies through the Ukrainian gas transport system (GTS) after the contract with Russia expired on January 1, 2025.
These negotiations also involve the interests of Slovakia and Hungary. Representatives of both countries have strongly urged the European Union to intervene in order to avoid an energy crisis in Central Europe.
Slovakia, in particular, estimates potential financial losses from the suspension of transit at 220 million euros. Slovak authorities have threatened Ukraine in case no agreement is reached, including possible restrictions on electricity supplies or refugee assistance.
The Ukrainian side, on the other hand, has stated that it is ready to consider the resumption of transit under certain conditions, but emphasizes that it will not allow Russian gas to enter Europe through other countries.
