The Czech Republic is experiencing a significant rise in flu cases, with respiratory infections increasing by 30% over the past week, now affecting 1,940 people per 100,000 residents.
The surge has been especially dramatic among school-age children, where cases have doubled in just one week, according to a report from the State Health Institute.
The institute confirmed that the country is currently in the midst of a nationwide epidemic, with flu cases continuing to grow. In the third week of January, doctors identified 80% more flu cases compared to the previous week. “In the category of flu-related diseases, which is more sensitive for assessing flu morbidity, although it still significantly underestimates actual flu prevalence, the number of cases has increased by almost 80% compared to the previous week,” said Kateřina Fabianová, Deputy Head of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Department at the National Health Institute.
Experts point out that many individuals with respiratory infections do not seek medical attention, meaning these cases are not reflected in official statistics. Studies have shown that up to 44% of people continue working while sick, with some opting to work from home to avoid the financial hit of sick leave.
As the flu epidemic persists, authorities urge the public to take precautions to limit the spread of the virus.
