On Tuesday, Arabic inscriptions were discovered on a section of the East Side Gallery, a part of the Berlin Wall.
According to Die Welt, the police confirmed that five inscriptions had appeared on the walls, including one on a section featuring the flag of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Star of David.
Two of the inscriptions have been deciphered. One of them says “God is great” in Arabic. The state security police have initiated an investigation into the property damage.
The East Side Gallery is the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall, measuring 1.3 kilometers. Before the wall’s fall in 1989, it divided the Friedrichshain district in East Berlin and the Kreuzberg district in West Berlin. Today, this gallery is a popular tourist attraction. One of its most famous paintings is “The Brotherly Kiss,” which depicts a kiss between the General Secretary of the GDR, Erich Honecker, and the leader of the USSR, Leonid Brezhnev.
