Greece reduces senior military officer positions

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has overseen a significant reduction in senior officer ranks as part of an emergency review of the structure of Greece’s Armed Forces.

The review, led by General Dimitrios Choupis, Chief of the General Staff, resulted in cuts across all branches of the military. These include 36 brigadier generals in the Army, five captains in the Navy, seven brigadier generals in the Air Force, 369 colonels, 191 naval captains, and 185 Air Force captains.

The reductions aim to address the issue of overstaffing, as the number of certain ranks previously exceeded organizational needs by more than threefold.

Announcing the launch of a broad modernization of the Armed Forces, Defense Minister Dendias confirmed in November plans to close dozens of military bases across the country and transition to “flexible units.”

This initiative follows earlier reforms announced by Dendias, which include plans to restructure Greece’s military reserves.
