Latvian divers deployed to investigate damaged underwater cable

A team of divers from the Latvian National Armed Forces has been sent to the Baltic Sea to investigate the damage to the Ventspils-Gotland optical cable.

The cable, located within Sweden’s economic zone, was severely damaged, prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Latvian military is working alongside Swedish coast guard vessels to assess the situation.

The Swedish prosecutor’s office launched a probe into a possible act of sabotage after the damage was discovered, announcing the investigation on Sunday, January 26. The focus of the inquiry is the bulk carrier Vezhen, which passed near the damaged cable at 00:45 GMT on the same day.

As part of the investigation, Swedish authorities issued a warrant to detain the Vezhen in the Baltic Sea. On Monday, January 27, officials boarded the detained vessel to continue their investigation.
