Poland and Canada agree on nuclear energy cooperation

On January 28, Poland and Canada signed an agreement establishing a legal framework for enhanced collaboration in the field of nuclear energy.

This was announced by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk following a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Reuters reports. Poland aims to reduce its reliance on coal and has already selected Westinghouse Electric to build its first nuclear power plant on the Baltic Sea coast. However, the project’s financing has yet to be finalized.

The new agreement between Poland and Canada is intended to strengthen cooperation in nuclear technologies. Earlier, in October 2022, Poland signed an agreement with South Korea for the construction of a second nuclear power plant, accelerating its efforts to achieve energy independence.

In September 2024, Warsaw approved an environmental permit for the construction of its first nuclear plant. According to the plans, construction will begin in 2026, with commissioning scheduled for 2033.
