Belgium requests extradition of terrorist attack suspects from Spain and the Netherlands

The Belgian prosecutor’s office has requested the authorities of Spain and the Netherlands to extradite two suspects allegedly involved in the attack on football fans in Brussels in 2023.

Both suspects are accused of being involved in the search for the weapon used in the attack. Belgium has officially submitted an extradition request, the prosecutor’s office reported.

Earlier, it was revealed that Spanish police arrested one of the wanted individuals at Málaga Airport. Before that, another suspect had been detained in the Netherlands. The attack took place on October 16, 2023, in Brussels. A 45-year-old Tunisian national, Abdesalem Lassoued, opened fire with an automatic rifle on three Swedish football fans. Two of them were killed, while the third was injured. Authorities classified the incident as a terrorist attack.

Later, Belgian police neutralized the attacker during a special operation in the Schaerbeek district, where he lived. It was discovered that Lassoued was in Belgium illegally, and the authorities had failed to take measures for his deportation despite a prior decision.
