Belgium has temporarily closed its airspace due to a technical issue with the country’s air traffic control service, Skeyes.
From the afternoon of Thursday, January 30, Belgium banned all takeoffs and landings.
Skeyes explained that the closure of the airspace was caused by a “technical problem” discovered around 3:00 PM local time.
According to Skeyes spokesperson Kurt Verwilligen, the air traffic management system used by Skeyes to control Belgium’s airspace “was not functioning properly.” The exact cause of the problem has not been determined yet.
As a result, all aircraft flying at around 7,500 meters over Belgium at the time were diverted to neighboring countries.
