The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament has expressed openness to collaborating with the far-right Patriots for Europe (PfE) to stall the European Green Deal.
PfE chairman and France’s Rassemblement National leader, Jordan Bardella, sent a letter on January 29 urging conservative and nationalist groups—including ECR, the European People’s Party, and Europe of Sovereign Nations—to unite in pushing for a temporary halt to the Green Deal. Bardella argued that suspending the initiative would provide an opportunity to “re-evaluate its objectives and applications” as the EU risks “being further marginalized by the United States and China.” He called on the groups to support a parliamentary debate and introduce a resolution—though non-binding—to suspend the deal.
ECR leaders Patryk Jaki and Nicola Procaccini responded, signaling their willingness to engage. “Dialogue between our political groups is crucial, and we are open to further discussions with [PfE] and those who share our concerns about the economic and social implications of the Green Deal,” they wrote in their letter, dated January 29.
While ECR stopped short of explicitly endorsing a suspension, they stressed their long-standing concerns over the deal’s implementation. “We remain committed to cooperating with like-minded partners like you to counter the ideological excesses of the Green Deal and advocate for policies that align with Europe’s economic and strategic priorities,” they added.
Though not yet a formal alliance, this exchange suggests growing cooperation among right-wing forces in the EU to challenge key environmental policies.
