In Moldova, the number of people identifying as Moldovans has increased compared to a decade ago. However, the percentage of those who claim to speak “Moldovan,” a language officially replaced by Romanian in the country’s Constitution, has declined.
This was reported by Moldova’s National Bureau of Statistics.
According to the latest census, nearly half of the population states that they speak “Moldovan.” The data shows that 77.2% of citizens identify as Moldovans, up from 75.3% in 2014.
At the same time, the number of people who consider themselves Romanians has grown to 7.9% in 2024, compared to 6.7% in the 2014 census.
Regarding native language, 49.2% of respondents in 2024 said they speak “Moldovan,” down from 56.9% in 2014.
Meanwhile, the percentage of those who declared Romanian as their native language has increased to 31.3%, compared to 23.2% in 2014.
