Most Germans support the key provisions of the immigration policy tightening plan proposed by the opposition parties, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), which were approved by the Bundestag on Wednesday, according to a Politbarometer survey provided by the ZDF TV channel.
The study found that 63% of respondents support the deportation of asylum seekers without entry documents (against 33%), 56% favor permanent border controls in Germany (against 42%), and 47% support the detention of individuals subject to deportation (against 47%).
Opinions on the support for CDU/CSU initiatives, which include votes from the right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) to gain a majority in the Bundestag, were almost equally divided: 47% in favor, 48% against. Among supporters of the conservative bloc, the situation is different: 66% approve of these steps, while 28% are opposed.
Regarding the effectiveness of these measures, 48% of respondents believe they will significantly reduce problems in the migration sector, while an equal number hold the opposite view.
According to 41% of survey participants, the migration issue is the most important for Germany, while 32% are concerned about economic problems, and 15% are worried about climate change.
The survey was conducted from January 27 to 29 by the Wahlen research group, via phone and online, among 1,428 German citizens. The margin of error is 2-3 percentage points.
