On the fifth anniversary of Brexit, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who previously served as President of the European Council during the Brexit negotiations, shared that the European Union “still misses” the United Kingdom.
Tusk’s remarks came in response to a recent YouGov poll, which revealed that British support for leaving the EU has fallen to its lowest level since the 2016 referendum, now at just 30%.
“We still miss you,” Tusk wrote, adding a winking emoji. As President of the European Council, Tusk played a key role in the Brexit negotiations, famously taking a firm stance in rejecting proposals that would have allowed Britain to retain some trade benefits post-Brexit. He insisted the UK would have to choose between a “hard” Brexit or no Brexit at all.
The UK officially left the EU on January 31, 2020—almost five years ago.
