In the future, emergency contraception will be free for all women with mandatory health insurance in Germany if there is evidence of violence or rape.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the Greens have long advocated for the free provision of emergency contraception. In 2024, a reproductive rights commission established by the government recommended making contraceptives free to prevent unwanted pregnancies, particularly for “sexually active people over 22 years old.”
However, the legal regulation has found its place in the Health Strengthening Act, which has now been passed jointly with the Free Democratic Party (FDP), due to an amendment proposed by two parliamentary groups.
Until now, the cost of post-rape pills was only covered if the victims were under 22 years old.
