The French government has expressed concern that one in five fatal road accidents in the country is caused by drug use.
This statement was made by France’s Transport Minister, Philippe Tabarot. He was commenting on a school bus accident that occurred on January 30, in which a teenage girl lost her life.
According to the minister, the driver’s saliva test came back positive for drugs. Tabarot warned about the risks of using drugs before getting behind the wheel. “One in five fatal accidents is caused by drugs,” he lamented.
At the same time, a quarter (25%) of fatal road accidents are caused by alcohol.
Tabarot also added that more “extensive” checks would be carried out on the roads.
“I spoke about this with my colleague, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, and he said that we are going to hold a number of actions to increase the number of checks. Unfortunately, what was done against alcohol with some drivers a few years ago will have to be done with drugs as well,” he added.
