Last year, German police recorded 218 politically motivated attacks on refugee shelters across the country—significantly more than the previous year.
This information comes from a response by the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a parliamentary inquiry from the Left Party in the Bundestag. In 2023, there were 167 such attacks.
According to the ministry, 28 of last year’s attacks were violent crimes. The ministry’s report states that 14 people were injured, including one child.
The number of politically motivated crimes against refugees outside of shelters has slightly decreased, according to current data. By the end of the year, authorities had registered 1,905 such crimes, 237 of which were violent. In 2023, this figure was 2,450.
However, in its response, the federal government notes that these figures are preliminary. The number is expected to rise in 2024, as numerous reports from the fourth quarter are likely to be submitted later.
For example, the number of political crimes against refugees tripled in the third quarter due to delayed reporting. Politically motivated crimes against refugee shelters have also regularly been revised upward.
