Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is traveling to Brussels to discuss the “reboot” of relations with the EU.
This is the first time a British leader will take part in an informal European Council summit since Brexit. The focus will be on security issues, as well as cooperation in defense, migration, and energy.
However, EU countries may demand preconditions, including guarantees for fishermen, before agreeing to closer cooperation. Negotiations may touch on fishing licenses, veterinary agreements, and youth mobility. Issues related to fishing licenses and trade are expected to become significant in future bilateral talks.
The UK hopes that its security and defense capabilities will help strengthen economic ties with the EU, despite some resistance within British society to the renewal of free movement.
