Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban once again called for negotiations in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, warning that without them, Ukraine risks becoming the “Afghanistan” for the European Union. He made this statement in an interview with Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
Orban expressed the opinion that a big mistake was made when the West began assisting Ukraine in February 2022. According to him, the conflict should have been isolated right from the start, a ceasefire should have been achieved, and negotiations should have begun. He emphasized that from the beginning, it was clear that Ukraine’s victory was impossible without the onset of a full-scale war, which is not an option. In his view, the only way to help Ukraine is through a ceasefire and peace.
He also added that it would have been easier to achieve a ceasefire at the start of the full-scale invasion than it is now. Orban stated that the West did not provide Ukraine with enough weapons, which led to a loss of time and lives.
No amount of weapons would have been enough. The West can only win this war if it sends its soldiers to Ukraine, but that is excluded. Ukrainians lack soldiers, which is why Trump is needed now, Orban said.
He emphasized that weak leaders cause wars, while strong ones create peace. According to Orban, Europeans believe that negotiations are immoral, which is absurd because negotiations are necessary to prevent the continuation of the war until complete destruction, otherwise, Ukraine risks becoming the “Afghanistan” for the EU.
At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end the war are going “quite well.”
