Schools have been closed, and emergency service teams have been deployed on the island of Santorini in response to increased seismic activity, raising concerns about a potential strong earthquake.
Over the past three days, more than 200 underwater tremors have been recorded in the region, leading to additional precautionary measures on nearby Aegean islands.
Greek Minister of Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias stated that these steps are preventive, and authorities remain vigilant. He also urged residents to strictly follow safety recommendations.
Although experts claim that the recorded tremors, with magnitudes of up to 4.7, are not linked to Santorini’s dormant volcano, they acknowledge that the situation requires close monitoring. On Sunday, rescue teams with search dogs arrived on the island, and tents were set up in open areas. Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid enclosed spaces with large crowds, while hotels have been instructed to drain their pools to prevent structural damage in the event of an earthquake.
Santorini welcomes over 3 million tourists annually, thanks to its picturesque landscapes and traditional whitewashed architecture. However, the current seismic activity is raising concerns among experts, including renowned Greek seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos, who warns of a possible stronger earthquake.
