The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), currently leading in German election polls, has vowed to reverse the partial legalization of cannabis if it comes to power.
On the eve of the elections, the CDU adopted a list of 15 immediate actions it promises to implement once in office. Among them is the repeal of the traffic-light coalition’s cannabis law.
“We will overturn the cannabis law of the traffic-light coalition. Our children and youth must be protected from drug use and addiction,” the party’s statement reads.
Germany legalized adult cannabis use in April 2024 with certain restrictions. Individuals are allowed to possess up to 50 grams of cannabis at home and grow up to three plants for personal use.
Since July, non-commercial cannabis cultivation has been permitted for groups of up to 500 people, provided they obtain prior authorization. However, commercial cannabis production remains banned, except for medical purposes.
