UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host EU leaders on May 19 for a Brexit-focused summit aimed at resetting relations between Britain and the European Union.
Speaking at a press conference after meeting with Starmer late Monday, European Council President António Costa stated that the summit would focus on developing “the closest possible relationship we can build together.”
“Today, we discussed defense and security, but the United Kingdom and the European Union want to do more together,” Costa told reporters.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also confirmed that the summit will take place in May in the UK. She noted that London and Brussels will “discuss the structure and format” of deeper security cooperation “and other topics at our joint defense summit in the UK in May.”
Since taking office in July last year, Starmer has pledged to “reset” relations with the EU, which were often strained under the previous Conservative government.
The May summit is expected to provide more concrete details on this reset, which has so far been marked by warm rhetoric but few specific political commitments.
The format of the meeting and whether all EU member states will participate has yet to be confirmed.
